Dr. Tanju Yılmazer, Medical Director of the Home Health Unit at Private Izmir Gazi Hospital and Family Medicine Specialist, gave information about the new Check-up approach implemented by the Home Care Unit and Gazi Hospital.
What is a Check-up?
A Check-up is a health screening conducted when a person has no significant health complaints or ailments. It's a fact that those who have regular check-ups have a longer lifespan than those who don't. As a result of such facts, the concept of a check-up has gained importance for about 20 years, and over the years, many different medical tests and applications have come to be known as check-ups. Unfortunately, however, we observe today that check-ups have become a marketing entity for healthcare institutions, leading to a misconception in society. Many of us unfortunately neglect health check-ups until we experience a health problem and only then apply to a healthcare institution. An important part of holistic medicine involves regular screenings and check-ups. Health check-ups should be determined according to age, gender, family history, and lifestyle. Your health history, past vaccinations, and lifestyle will determine which evaluations and tests will be performed, and the latest scientific data will be taken as a basis.
Generally speaking, what are the new approaches to the concept of Check-up scientifically?
Today, the understanding of performing only certain tests regardless of age, gender, and lifestyle has been abandoned. Now, while check-ups offer the possibility of early diagnosis, identifying risk factors that could be important for people's health status, ensuring the management of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension if present, and supporting a healthy lifestyle applications are also becoming important.
In the new period, you have started serving with a new check-up understanding as the Home Care Unit and Gazi Hospital; what do you do differently from other institutions?
First of all, beyond tests performed the same way for every age and every gender; in our evaluation, we put the human factor at the forefront with their environment, lifestyle, and past history and listen to those who apply first because everyone is unique and different. Their health and their understanding of the health concept also show differences in the same way. We care about this truth in our practice. Also, an important difference of ours is that we can perform all these tests and evaluations outside the hospital, at home or in locations preferred by the individuals. The service we provide is not limited to the check-up process, which is a health evaluation. We want to establish an ongoing positive communication with our clients who apply to us. After the check-up is done, we offer suggestions regarding health and lifestyle, provide information about health risks that could affect health in the future, and as part of this, we convey our suggestions for healthy living; we also provide consultancy and follow-up after the check-up. We should all create an approach that lead to results concerning our health and improves our health.
With the check-up understanding we apply at the hospital or at home, as Gazi Hospital, we contribute to and guide you in creating an approach that is correct and develops your health.
