Specialist in Child Health and Diseases Dr. Havva Evrengül at Private Izmir Gazi Hospital stated that hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a viral infection commonly seen especially in children, saying, "Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is caused by Coxsackievirus, which belongs to the Enterovirus group. Although this disease is generally seen in children under the age of 10, it can rarely be seen in adults as well."

What are the Symptoms?

Stating that the symptoms of hand-foot-and-mouth disease usually appear 3-7 days after the infection is contracted, Dr. Havva Evrengül said, "Principal symptoms of the disease include high fever, painful sores in the mouth, on the tongue and gums, red rashes and blisters on the palms, soles of the feet and sometimes on the buttocks, loss of appetite, fatigue, sore throat and difficulty swallowing."

Is it Contagious?

Saying that hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a contagious disease, Dr. Havva Evrengül said, "The virus can spread through the saliva, nasal discharge of the infected person or through contact. Additionally, the risk of transmission from surfaces like shared toys, towels, and kitchen utensils is also quite high."

Treatment Process

Noting that there is no specific treatment for hand-foot-and-mouth disease, Dr. Havva Evrengül said, "Since it is generally a mild disease, symptoms pass on their own within 7-10 days. However, to alleviate symptoms, paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used to reduce fever and pain. It is also important to consume plenty of fluids during this process. Mouthwashes or soothing sprays can be used for mouth sores."

Prevention Methods

Providing information about prevention methods to avoid catching hand-foot-and-mouth disease, Dr. Havva Evrengül added, "Frequent washing of hands with soap and water, regular cleaning of shared items, and avoiding close contact with sick people are among the measures that can be taken to protect against hand-foot-and-mouth disease."

Early Diagnosis

Underlining once again that hand-foot-and-mouth disease is generally a mild but contagious viral infection, Dr. Havva Evrengül said, "The disease can be easily overcome with early diagnosis and appropriate care. When symptoms are noticed, it is of great importance to consult an expert doctor for the correct management of the process."
