General Surgery Specialist Dr. Emran Kuzey Avcı at Gazi Hospital provided information about Pilonidal Sinus (ingrown hair), which is often seen in young people and those who work sitting down.

Why does it occur?

It usually occurs when shed hair enters through the holes in the tailbone area and causes inflammation there. Inactivity, excess weight, and tight clothing can accelerate the process.

Is there a non-surgical solution?

Laser pilonidal sinus treatment is very popular in early-stage cases. We can clean and close the inside of the sinus with a laser probe without making any incisions. The patient can go home the same day and start work the next day.

What about advanced cases?

If the disease has progressed, we prefer minimal invasive (microsinusectomy) methods. Instead of making large wounds as in classical surgeries, we complete the procedure by cleaning only that area and making very small incisions. Thus, the risk of recurrence is also reduced.

What is your suggestion?

Pilonidal sinus is not a source of 'shame.' When it is not applied in time, it gathers pus and becomes much more painful. If you suspect it, definitely see a general surgeon.
